What is a design system?

A design system is a product that equips teams with the necessary tools and resources to build consistent and cohesive experiences.

Serving as a communication hub, it articulates the 'what', 'how' and 'why' of design decisions, fostering a shared language and standardized approach. Design systems typically include resources such as style guides, component and pattern libraries, code, and guidelines.

Benefits of using a design system

Enterprise design systems can deliver up to 80% efficiency gains when leveraged throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Design: Design systems streamline the design process by reducing time spent on recreating components, enabling designers to focus on core problem-solving.
  • Engineering: Aligning design elements with code provides developers with a plug and play solution for all front-end UI development, reducing the time it takes to bring a concept to market.
  • Product: As the system matures, it becomes the organization's single source of truth, fostering a shared vision and consistent products. When our teams are ready to scale, design systems act as a helpful onboarding tool, allowing them to contribute sooner.
  • Users: Utilizing familiar design patterns in experiences and products enhances user comfort and confidence, effectively reducing the learning curve.
